The missions emphasis of South is to bring the glory of God to the nations of the world. Psalm 96.3-4a says “Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous deeds among all peoples, for great is the Lord and most worthy of praise.”

International Ministry

Did you know that the Lansing area is an international community? Michigan State University is home to roughly 6500 international students from over 130 different countries. Many of these students bring their families with them, multiplying that number with spouses, parents and children. More than that, mid-Michigan is home for 10,000-13,000 refugees, with Lansing resettling 400-700 each year.
South Church is preparing English as a Second Language (ESL) classes as a method to help meet the needs of internationals in our community. If you are interested in connecting with the world by sharing your time practicing English conversation, please contact Pastor Tim Van Loh.

Other Opportunities to Minister to Internationals (at MSU)

1. Coffee Hour
Every Friday during the academic school year from 4-6pm in the International Center food court, come meet international students, faculty, and staff for conversation over free coffee and tea! All are welcome and visitor parking is available across the street from the International Center.

2. International Friendship Program
IFP is actively recruiting community members to join as Friends for international students and scholars. Friends will be matched with a student or scholar for the academic year, with the intention of meeting at least once per month to share cultural activities and build relationships. You can read more and find the application info here: The deadline for this fall is September 12th, but the earlier the better!

Joy Shantz has participated in these programs and may be able to help answer questions here.

Join us every Wednesday evening from 5:30-6:30 pm in the Board Room as we pray for: • the persecuted church • special needs of missionaries • mission activities here at South • missionaries supported by South • the unreached areas of the world

Every October, South has the privilege of hosting missionaries who are on home assignment. They share with us during Sunday services and adult communities, and in various fellowships. Also there are activities planned throughout the week where you can get a closer look into the lives and needs of our missionaries.

new_mission_focus_logoMission Focus is a group of men and women that are focused on connecting our people with missions. They meet on the fourth Monday of each month (September through May) at 12:00pm for a luncheon at the church. After sharing a meal together, the group shares a prayer time, and has a guest missionary speaker sharing how God is working in their ministry around the world. Come and be informed!

If you enjoy sewing or helping, this is a great way to use your talents. This group of ladies meets the second Thursday of each month (September – May) at the church at 9:00am. A potluck lunch is served at noon, followed by devotions and a business meeting. Types of sewing projects:
  1. Quilt squares are cut, pieced and tied-off into quilts for missionaries, organizations and needy people
  2. Goody-bags are made and filled with grooming items for children at Youth Haven Ranch
  3. Bibs and lap robes are made for nursing homes
  4. Bags are made for walkers
